Trump Plans Tariffs on Semiconductor Imports, Apple Gets a Pass

US:AAPL:Apple

US President Donald Trump said he will impose tariffs on semiconductor imports “very shortly,” but spare goods from companies like Apple that have pledged major U.S. investments.

“Tim Cook would be in pretty good shape,” Trump told reporters Thursday at a White House dinner with top tech executives and founders, referencing Apple’s recent US$600 billion domestic manufacturing initiative.

Trump signaled that companies bringing production to the U.S. — or planning to — would avoid the tariffs. “If they’re coming in, building, planning to come in, there will not be a tariff,” he said.

Last month, Trump floated a 100% tariff on semiconductors, warning the rate could climb to 200% or even 300%. Apple, thanks to its investment commitments, is set to escape those levies.

Thank you
