Dow Jones fell 1,153 points

US stocks suffered a broad selloff as investors worried that the Federal Reserve may be falling behind in its fight against inflation after keeping interest rates unchanged. The Dow Jones fell 1,153 points (2.19%), its biggest one-day decline since April 2025, while the S&P 500 dropped 1.52% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 1.74%, leaving it more than 10% below its all-time high.

The bond market reacted sharply, with the 10-year Treasury yield rising above 4.67% and the 30-year yield climbing above 5.2%, its highest level since 2007, signalling investors doubt the Fed’s commitment to controlling inflation. Three Fed officials voted for a rate hike, but Chairman Kevin Warsh maintained that the Fed remains ready to act if needed.

Inflation concerns were further fuelled by a surge in oil prices after renewed Middle East tensions. WTI crude jumped more than 6% to US$84.46 per barrel, while semiconductor stocks extended their rout, with the SOXX ETF falling 5.5% for a fifth consecutive session. AI-related chipmakers including Micron (-10%), KLA (-10%), and AMD (-5.5%) came under heavy pressure as investors questioned the returns from massive AI spending.

Despite the short-term volatility, some strategists, including Morgan Stanley and Truist, believe the long-term outlook for equities and AI remains positive, viewing the recent pullback as a potential buying opportunity rather than the start of a prolonged downturn.

South Korea’s government convened an emergency meeting of its top financial authorities after a severe stock market rout wiped billions off investor wealth. The Kospi has fallen about 40% from its June peak, with the latest selloff intensified by weaker-than-expected SK Hynix earnings, growing doubts over the AI investment boom and heavy retail selling. The decline was severe enough to trigger a market-wide circuit breaker for a second consecutive day.

Much of the political backlash has centred on the introduction of single-stock leveraged ETFs in May, which lawmakers argue amplified market volatility by encouraging speculative trading in a handful of large-cap stocks.
